This paper describes a simple computer programme developed for a medium-sized engineering firm manufacturing various types and sizes of machine pinions. The programme is capable of assigning operators to their appropriate machines for the purpose of machining components in a manufacturing system designed on the Group Technology principles. The particular machine or machines an operator can operate were already defined as part of an input data. A number of test runs were made with different batch sizes, firstly, for the purpose of ensuring the proper operation of the computer programme, and secondly to obtain sufficient data on man/machine interaction which is necessary in the analysis in this study.
