Author Biography

Howard O. NJOKU

Dr Howard NJOKU is the Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in fluid and solid mechanics, and thermodynamics. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and leads the Applied Renewable and Sustainable Energy Research Group, which is engaged in research within the fields of thermofluids and energy engineering. His research spans the broad of the renewable energy technologies, including studies on the solar energy resource, solar thermal systems (solar ponds, solar cookers, solar air and water heaters, solar drying, solar distillation, Trombe wall systems, etc) and solar PV systems. He also has expertise in CFD, energy and exergy analysis, assessment of environmental impacts of energy transformation processes, thermodynamic analysis of power plants, etc. His present research interests are focused on infrared thermal imaging analysis of thermally active systems (solar PV modules, thermal storage devices, mobile devices, etc) to identify thermal characteristics that may not be readily determined using traditional methods; development of novel hybrid solar thermal devices including PV/thermal, solar thermoelectric generators, PV/TEG/thermal, etc; and application of phase change thermal storage materials. Dr Njoku was a recipient of the Petroleum Technology Development Trust Fund (PTDF) fellowship to undertake the University Lecturers Skill Enhancement Training Programme at the Grenoble Ecole de Management, Grenoble, France. He is currently a Senior Research Associate to the Department of Mechanical Engineering Science, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of Johannesburg, South Africa and has published 2 book chapters and about 40 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles.
